it depends on where you live. California for example offers a different certification for “loss prevention” than that of a basic security guard. to my knowledge, “sears” has never used uniform LP agents. you will probably be working plainclothes on the floor or watching monitors to deter theft and apprehend shoplifters.
word of advice: a great deal of retail loss comes from internal sources. (employees)

First off, you will go through 2-3 interviews before you are “officially” extended employment. The first two interviews usually occur the same day. You are interviewed by an ASC (assistant store coach) during the first interview. It is the “dummy” interview. It is a basic overview of your application and the minimum qualifications for the job you are applying. Verbal and interaction skills is what they are looking for. It basically determines that you know how to act around people and you are not a caveman. The second interview, usually occurs the same day, happens with a different ASC. They will ask you questions like, “tell me about a time when your integrity was compromised, and what you did about it.” Once again, this is showing you know how to converse with people. They are not looking for right and wrong answers, just the ability to show you have some intelligence to hold conversational communication. If you make it to the third interview, you are all but hired. The third interview is the “culture” interview. It is with the store coach, or store manager. It is just a basic overview of the company, the job, and what is expected of you. The store coach trusts that the ASC’s have made a good choice in hiring you. He/she may want to know a little about your background, etc.
Sears has an extensive training program. It is all computerized. You will spend about 40+ hours on the computer answering stupid questions and taking crazy tests before you even get knuckle deep into asset protection. Sears wants you to get this training out of the way before you do any “floor” training. The floor training is training to make you aware of shoplifter alert signals. Then you have to be certified to make shoplifter apprehensions.
Asset Protection is another name for Loss Prevention. The two are one in the same. We do everything from audits to catching shoplifters. Sears standard is that you wear street clothes and not uniforms or badges or anything like that. We are suppose to look like shoppers. Loss prevention is different in many areas of the country. Some guys are just catching shoplifters, some are just counting Levi’s or T.V’s all the time, and some are watching camera’s all day. I can give you more insight if you choose to do the interview and what you should expect, depending on what part of the country you live….I hope this helps…

i worked at sears several years ago. i only had one interview with the HR lady and the second interview was to be hired and complete my needed paperwork. this was for a part time sales clerk though (not LP) maybe it is more complicated now. but if what Joe says is true, i don’t know why someone would go through that many interviews to work at a sears store. they don’t pay all that well.

first of all the questions that you will be asked will differ from interviewer to interviewer. Sears will want you to be efficient in handcuff procedure, to their standards, not comparable to any training you may have received while performing the duties of a security guard. Any license that you currently hold(not expired) carry with you. They will gladly inform you if it is going to help of hinder your interview process. They will also understand that you might be presenting more than you need to. It’s better to bring anything you think might help, and then use it at your own discretion. I will offer you this bit of advise. Security detail, especially patrolling areas be it through standard walk through or patrolling in a vehicle, differs greatly from asset protection. In asset Protection you will walk the floors right alongside the shoplifters. You will be determining who to follow and when to back off. You will be required to maintain constant sight of the individuals product in hand and where the product is being placed on their person. At the same time you are acting as a shopper keeping a close eye. Be aware of what I like to call corner drops. This is when you witness the individual pocket an item. You continue to creatively find ways to see every move they are making. This is when the corner or also known as the end cap drop appears. The subject tossed the item quickly onto any display out of your sight for 1 split second. Now if you continue to follow the subject all the way through the last point of sales and make an apprehension, you have now detained a private citizen against their own will. End result once you have them in the office and start demanding that they themselves empty their pockets. A whole new realization of reversal charges just jumped right up in your face. I could go on forever, but I understand your concerns.
The main thing you need to think about is boosters. They are the individuals that hit a store quickly and ferociously . filling carts to the top with telephones, dvd’s nicorette if not locked up, and anything that has a good dollar value. you can usually spot them on camera by following anyone that just placed a rubbermaid tub or a large trash can into their cart. They will fill them all up and bolt out the front doors right into a van that is waiting and they will throw the entire cart right in and more or less snicker as they drive off in a vehicle with no tags. …………Thats loss prevention APS. Knowing this now i wouldn’t be too worried about being a receipt checker. especially since you know now how it works. post again if you want to know what the cutoff point is for apprehending outside of the store.
